Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American musician, actress, and rapper. Her performance as a singer, music actor, filmmaker and TV performer has won the actress the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won an Grammy Award as well as six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was the daughter of a Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and an Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior, was raised and born within Newark New Jersey. Her parents divorced at the age of Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah was a student at the Catholic School in Newark, New Jersey and was raised through the Baptist Church. Her stage name Latifah meaning delicate and very compassionate in Arabic was handed to her her cousin when she was just eight years old. Being a tall girl, her height of 5'10 inches Latifah was a forward on her high school basketball team. In her high school's play, Latifah performed "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah was a member of Ladies Fresh, a rap collective that started her career in beatboxing. Latifah was among the founding members of the model of the Flavor Unit which at that time consisted of MCs who were grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, made a recording of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music, who worked for Latifah during that time was awed by her single. The song was released in 1988. Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's debut single.
